Naming the DCC Component

We need a name!

DCC is the organisational unit's acronym. It should not denote the software we'll be developing for this OU. So we need to find a name for this software component.

We've been using a mineral/rock naming scheme. Most names come from this list.

Please if have ideas, contribute them here as comments to this page.

    What about Klondike?

Klondike (kl?n`d?k), region of Yukon Territory NW Canada, just E of the Alaska border. It lies around Klondike River, a small stream that enters the Yukon River from the east at Dawson. The discovery in 1896 of rich placer gold deposits in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek, a tributary of the Klondike, caused the Klondike stampede of 1897-98.

oh yes, I like klondike, not for the sound, but for the canadian symbol, well suited with cpac project.

      I like this one.

    2. Apr 29, 2009

I prefer quarry, suggested by Nancy, in this respect. Mine doesn't sound like a name, it sounds like... well... a mine!

Quarry and mine have a similar meaning, but quarry sounds more like a name to me.

      1. Apr 29, 2009

To my opinion quarry does not sound nice and only means what it means... A good name should allow several point of views.

    Other suggestions:

HIGHGRADE - Rich ore. Selective mining of the best ore in a deposit.

MOTHERLODE - The starting place or origin of a metal. A vein which contains the original metal "in place".

ALLOY - A compound of two or more metals, usually produced by fusion.

Okay, this is not a very creative name, but how about diamond?

     Advantages of this name:

    • It's not terribly long.
    • It begins with the letter "D" like "DCC" (easy to remember the association).
    • It's extremely hard, like the implementation of DCC is going to be (kidding).

      Too funny !

    2. Apr 30, 2009

Julie likes xyno.  She suggests that it is the reverse strand of Onyx.  I like it too.  It's the mirror image of what we did in Onyx.

    What about Caldera?

    Caldera

The large, basin-shaped crater at the top of a volcano. A caldera is formed when the original peak collapses into an empty chamber below.
